Field Trials and Experiments in Europe for Future Multimedia Mobile Satellite Services

Some important field trials are being performed in Europe to demonstrate satellite multimedia mobile services. Some are being put forward within the ACTS (Advanced Communications Technologies and Services) programme of the E.U., others have been planned by the ESA, while others by national Space Agencies (e.g. ASI in Italy). The paper reports on UMTS trials to be performed within the ACTS SINUS project and within the ESA “RobMod” project (2 GHz). Then it describes the ACTS SECOMS/ABATE trials (20/30 GHz) and results achieved. Finally, it briefly introduces the ASI DAVID mission for communications experiments at far EHF frequencies (90 GHz).
